The Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network (QAWN) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and industry to make it easier for agricultural employers in rural Queensland to find the workers they need.
QAWN is made up of 6 Agriculture Workforce Officers who are responsible for servicing specified regions across the state and are hosted by appropriate industry bodies. BGGA host an Agriculture Workforce Officer who services the North Queensland region.
The Workforce Officers can work with you to understand your workforce needs and to connect you with the most appropriate solution to help you grow your business. This could include information on the variety of available employment options and wage subsidies, connecting you with local recruitment and training providers, and/ or providing an update on what funding opportunities are available to upskill your workers.
The network will also help both existing and future employees understand how to improve their own capacity to work in agriculture and increase their employment prospects within agriculture. This is achieved by working closely with schools, universities, employment and training service providers.
QAWN is a Queensland Government funded project funded until September 2018 and is part of a package of rural jobs initiatives which also includes:
- Rural Jobs and Skills Alliance (RJSA), made up of representative members from Queensland Farmers Federation, AgForce, Growcom and Canegrowers
- Agriculture Schools to Industry Partnership Program (SIPP), delivered by AgForce
- Agribusiness Gateway schools Program (AGWS), delivered by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF)

Seasonal Work Incentive Trial – An opportunity to Employ Locals
The Department of Employment held information sessions in Townsville, Ingham, Home Hill and Bowen to inform growers and employment service providers about the new federal government Seasonal Work Incentives Trial, which aims to assist growers recruit workers locally. In addition to the information session Julia Wheway, Agriculture Workforce Officer, arranged a farm tour in Bowen to give the employment service providers an insight into the types of work participants would be involved in and what type of person and skills are required. The group was kindly hosted by Melita and Jamie Jurgens and Carl Walker, who gave the participants an overview of their farms labour requirements and a tour of the paddocks and packing sheds.
Eligible employees can earn up to $5000 working in seasonal horticulture roles, whilst retaining their income support payments, giving employees the opportunity to take on casual temporary work on local farms and hopefully gain long term work as a result. The trial is available for 2 years from 1st July 2017. There is currently a pool of local workers who would welcome the opportunity to work with you.
