BGGA was previously known as Bowen District Growers Association, before the amalgamation with Gumlu Local Producers Association in 2011. This lead to the inception of Bowen Gumlu Growers Association.
Prior to the amalgamation, each association was established for many years in their respective areas, with first mention of the District Growers Association in the 1960’s. In 2007, the then Bowen District Growers Association applied and were successful in obtaining levy funds to match their co-investment to employ a full time Industry Development Officer. This role has been present in the region since this time, allowing the local industry to engage in industry initiatives and lead own research priorities.
In late 2013, BGGA applied for funding as part of the Queensland Horticulture Workforce Development Plan 2013-15 to employ a full time Regional Workforce Development Officer. This has allowed for a more cohesive approach in relation of workforce in the region and across the state of Queensland.
